This post features the cast of characters from my latest project with the fantastic Andrew Rostan, of An Elegy for Amelia Johnson fame. We're in the long process of pitching and waiting now. Here's hoping! It's a great story of love and assassins all set against the historic beauty of Savannah, GA--and don't think I've missed the irony that I'm working on a story taking place in Savannah just after I moved away from it. The point is, it's a fantastic story with everything you need to have a great time:

So, I'm pretty easily distracted to begin with...but there seem to be more distractions than usual here in New York, New York...the biggest of which is my seemingly never-ending job search. But, excuses aside, I'm back with many sketches of--you guessed it!--animals!

The Bronx Zoo is actually pretty cool and pretty big. I didn't even get to see everything there, and I was there the whole day! I broke out a new sketchbook for the occasion. Witness the return...of recycled paper!

I have been drawing a bit for the last month, so hopefully updates will resume regularly post-haste. Tally ho!

Artemis Iphigenea

Sketch for a personal work--planning on finishing in color soon-ish. These lovely ladies are the goddess Artemis (left) and Iphigenia (right) who will become the goddess Hecate (far right). The story goes that during the Trojan War, Agamemnon killed a deer within Artemis's sacred grove and boasted that he was the better hunter. Well once Agamemnon's ships were out to sea, the goddess stilled the winds, leaving he and all his ships stranded. By consulting an oracle, Agamemnon discovered the only way to appease the goddess would be to sacrifice his own daughter, Iphigenia. When the time came for the actual sacrifice, Iphigenia was spirited away by the goddess herself and a deer was left in her place. Artemis then transformed the mortal Iphigenia into the immortal Hecate, her partner in magic, and the triple goddess of crossroads.

In other news, drawing people actually using a bow and arrow is hard.

Tolkien, how I love thee...

Here, in all its glorious nerdiness, are the character designs and thumbnails for my thesis project--also known as the beginnings of my adaptation of JRR Tolkien's The Silmarillion into an epic graphic novel. The first twenty pages were completed for my thesis, and you can see them at my all-things Tolkien-related blog: From the Lost Road. That's where I'll be posting all my Tolkien-related artworks so be sure to keep an eye on it!

Anyway, these lovely ladies are the Valier, Queens of the Valar:

And here we have the Valar Kings:

That last bit was a fun exercise to try and give each of the characters a unique shape. Try it sometime if you too have a massive cast that can sometimes be hard to keep track of.

Here's the main antagonist of The Silmarillion, a former member of the Valar and Sauron's predecessor, Melkor, who became known as Morgoth after he was discounted from the Valar:

Last, but certainly not least, we have the seven fathers of the Dwarves as well as the Two Trees!

These last couple of sketches are the thumbnails fro the pages I presented with my thesis--the pages changed a lot between these thumbnails and the finished versions...so don't be surprised to see them revised again one day...

Proud to say that I'm still not dead--here's some proof!

This first sketch is Raven and she belongs to my good friend Andre Frattino, author and artist of the 'Flagler's Few' series!

Contrary to popular belief, no she's not water-bending...she's just a witch with all sorts of crazy powers! This next sketch includes a bunch of characters from one of my own in-progress stories--their appearances have actually changed a lot from when I first conceived them here...

Next is another character of my own, a gypsy named Isra! I'm working more on her story, so you'll probably see her floating around here more often in the future.

And here's some shameless fanart! Man I love water-bending. I love the ATLAverse in general...and I'm not sorry.

Sadly, the last posters, those for the HHIPC, did not get finished as the class was only five weeks long and the professor just happened to be out of town the week and a half before the end of the class. But you never know, I just may finish them up in the not-so-distant future :)

My New Year's resolution was to be a little more attentive to my internet presence... I feel like I'm drawing all the time, but never show it. So, here's to an even better year than the last and a stronger relationship with my virtual sketchbook!

On the left you'll see a tattoo design (that I sincerely hope the boyfriend will use) based on Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series--please disregard the fact that I drew a blue whale as opposed to a sperm whale--it will be fixed if a certain someone decides to permanently place this on their body. And on the right is a sketch for for an illustration I'd like to complete based on a goddess of the stars.

The ideas represented on the left are probably copyrighted to the Douglas Adams' estate... and they most certainly don't belong to me.

Whoa... it has been way to long, but you know what internet? I'm not sorry, and let me tell you why. I wasn't avoiding you on purpose--I promise--I was inking a graphic novel--that's right a real life book that's going to be published and put on sale in a store near you! The book is titled 'All Saints Day' and it was drawn by SCAD's own Dove McHargue. It's the sequel to the crime noir hit 'Past Lies' so go pick up a copy now to get ready for the ASD release on November 2. Now I know what you're thinking, dear internet, but rest assured, I'll remind you when the book comes out so that you can go get your very own copy on the day it hits shelves.

Finally, here's your consolation prize! Don't ask me where it comes from, but for some reason I just felt like drawing a ridiculously cute tiger and elephant diptych. Just run with it.

Okay so that title isn't necessarily true... but these are drawings from this past winter break, during which I visited a friend in Denver and forced her to go to the aquarium with me. It was pretty fun just loitering and drawing fish all day :) Looking back, I probably should have taken the time to note what species each fish was... but now it can be a fun game for me and for you! If you care to figure it out and send me your findings I'll send you a free sketch :)

Yeah... I know... just... save it.

Anyway... I am officially a grad student now (yay) and I come to the interwebs bearing the gift of sketches (double yay)! I spent six weeks at home with the fam and I've got a ton of sketchbookish stuff to share, but I'm going to stretch it out for a bit yet.... You'll have to content yourselves with two for tonight--two to get us back in the groove (triple yay) so-to-speak.

These are some concepts for yet another story I've been thinking about when I probably should have been thinking other things. Surprise, surprise it's about two people meeting and falling in love (gwaaawww). Also there's seems to be a monster involved in the later pages... buuut I think that's from a different story. It's hard to keep track...

Finally we're back to my baby, my graphic novel, StrangeHearted. I'm starting to pencil the rest of the original 48-page storyline. The thing you have to remember here is that I pencil small (my finished pencils are only 6x9) and then scan them and blow them up to 10x15. Once they're printed, there is actually a lot of redrawing that happens before I start inking.

Yarr... here be some sketches of characters from an Oni book by the name of 'Polly and the Pirates.'

The story is about this prim and proper little girl that discovers she's actually the daughter of the pirate queen. She gets kidnapped a couple of times and becomes the new captain of her mum's old ship and has a jolly good adventure saving everyone from certain doom while searching for her mother's treasure trove. Here's a character sheet for Polly in her pirate regalia.

Here's the rough thumbnails of my entry for the SCAD Sequential Art anthology. This year's theme being biography, I decided to tell the story of Juan Diego, who saw the first apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico.

Interesting story: Since I was running low on time, I took the thumbnails you see here, blew them up to 10x15, changed them to blue line and inked directly over them. I was definitely a... weird process. But I'd like to think it turned out well in the end. Although, I still don't know whether it got in or not... but I will keep you posted :)

So here's some insight on my process when working on my graphic novel. I start out by doing these tiny thumbnails to figure out my page layouts, and I'm still almost positive that these thumbnails are illegible to anyone but me.

These represent the first twelve pages of my story, the rest of the thumbnails I drew directly on the script when I finished revising it for the second time. Aaand on the bottom of this page you can see a doodle of one of my main characters, Dominic.

Sooo me and DJ recently had a Sailor Moon marathon and needless to say I was a little inspired. I had forgotten how awesome that show really was. The Outer Senshi, soldiers of the outer planets Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, Pluto, were my favorite characters. Being as inspired as I was, I decided to sketch up some fanart.

SailorNeptune is of course inspired by the Neptune of Roman mythology. Since he was god of the sea, her powers are obviously water based:

Uranus was the Roman god of the sky, so SailorUranus has wind powers, but the attack 'World Shaking' always had me a little confused...

Although the Roman god Pluto was associated with death and the afterlife, SailorPluto's powers are more time-based. She is guardian of the Time Door and has the power to stop time, but her attack is still called, 'Dead Scream'

SailorSaturn is known as the soldier of destruction and silence. Saturn, in mythology, is a god of agriculture, but because he was the god that new when to plant and when to blight the fields, he became associated with death and the silence of winter. In the series, SailorSaturn explains that though she comes to destroy the world, SailorMoon is resposible for its rebirth.

Here's some rough cover designs for an upcoming two-part anthology. One book, entitled SUGAR, will feature cutesy, family-friendly stories while the other, SPICE, will feature more adult-rated stories. Both books will be written and drawn by all girls. I have a little story that will be in the SUGAR book, but I'm designing the cover for SPICE.

These are a few designs that were given the go-ahead by the professor heading the project, but there are quite a few changes to still be made. I'll probably be posting the progress as I go.

The Road goes ever on and on

Finally we come to my one true love: Tolkien and all his works, namely the Hobbit. As you might already know, this classic story is being made into a film to serve as something of a prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy that's already been made. It would be a dream come true to work on these films and I'm currently in contact with some folks that are doing just that. So, in attempts to tailor my portfolio, I've been working on some hobbit-centric pieces and these are some of the sketches that I drew to initially nail down what I wanted the characters to look like in my style.

The door of Bag End is a particularly important setting. Here it is before Bilbo's infamous adventure:

Also, you might have heard that they're making a second film to bridge the sixty-year gap between LOTR and The Hobbit. I suspect that they're going to involve young Aragorn and Arwen into that mess, so I figured I should sketch them as well. Plus it gave me an excuse to draw pretty medieval dresses:

I like Pokemon. I'm not ashamed to say it. I played the game, watched the show, read the manga, and now me and others of like-mind have decided to put together a little story about us... as pokemon trainers. It's been a lot of fun so far and we're still just in the concept phases. Anyway, here's some of my sketch stuffs thus far:

In our little ditty, I'm the flying type gym leader, DJ and Josh are the star trainers, and Lateef is the fighting type member of the Elite Four.

Obviously, pokemon doesn't belong to me--no matter how much I wish it did...

SEQA Senior Project is based mostly on one's own initiative and project, but there is one project that is required for everyone: a two page story of which only the first page must be fully finished with inks, tones, and at least one word balloon/sound effect. The story can be about anything... what did I pick? A couple in a mini-Cooper getting mobbed by football (soccer) hooligans.

Back to my sketchbook... These were some of my first experiments with brush pen. After I finished up the initial sketch, I inked with a brush pen and (on the later pages) filled them in a bit with the grey brush pens as well.

The muses are such elegant characters and I had a lot of fun playing with their different attributes and personas.

Even though I've already finished these particular pages, I want this blog to be a testing ground for my sketches and in-progress work, so I thought it would be a good idea to posted the WIP versions of these pages up here. So even though there were plenty of pages left in the white book... I bought one with a nice parchment texture to it and started fresh.
