Aside from a ton of freelance work [to pay the bills] I’ve also been starting work on my next graphic novel! Authored by Robert Rodi and to be published by Oni Press, the story is an intense, action-packed drama about Cleopatra’s daughter, Selene, and her struggles to return Egypt to its former glory.
Here are the initial sketches of the main character plus a Roman soldier:
And finally we have thumbnails for story illustrations, which you can see processed and finished on my Tumblr!
Though the images are mine, they are published courtesy of the great folks over at Oni Press. Thanks guys!
One of my favorite parts about living in NYC is the proximity to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For those that haven't been there, it is absolutely huge and filled to the brim with cool stuff--like the Greek and Roman sculpture gallery!
Warning: These are nude sculptures so...you know, beware.
These sketches served the duel function of practicing my dude-drawing as well as research for my next graphic novel, which is partially set in ancient Rome.
So, the first three are part of a pitch packet that may or may not happen, depending on which way the winds are blowing...but I rather like how they turned out. They are, more or less, modern interpretations of ancient gods that have been forced between a rock and a hard place. An intriguing premise, if you ask me.
Here we have the Hindu figures of Matsya and Rama, followed by a robotic crab monster:
And here are Baldr and Hodr of the Norse pantheon:
And here we have Athena and Bacchus:
And now, for something not entirely different but definitely not part of the same project, are Athene, Proserpine, and Bride, as mentioned in TH White's The Once and Future King:
Last, but most certainly not least, are some thumbs from a new project I will be endeavoring soon:
I can't say much as of right now, but you will definitely know more soon!
The characters heretofore presented are most certainly not mine. If you want to know more about the story of the forlorn gods, you should go talk to Nolan T Jones!
Wow...it has been a really long time, but I'm finally back! Well...for a little while at least :)
I've been keeping busy doing a lot of things I can't post all over the interwebs and haven't had a lot of time for keeping up with the good old sketchbook, but I'm starting to get back into the swing of it. I'll be playing catch-up this week, posting some older stuff that I didn't get to before all this freelance hubbub started.
I'll start off with some oldies but goodies, preliminary sketches for a graphic novel project with Archaia. The book itself won't be out for a while...but here's some of the early stuff from our pitch packet. You can see the finished colored illustrations over at my portfolio or my tumblr!
These characters do belong to Andrew and I so please be cool and DON'T STEAL. Just wait for the book--it's going to be worth your while!
